Kirk Tousaw is a barrister and advocate based in Vancouver and Victoria, BC. Kirk works with Jack Lloyd Law Corporation and is able to take on clients across Canada.
Kirk is an active proponent of modernizing our cannabis policies and is humbled to have been part of helping to legalize cannabis in Canada. He is a founding Board member of the Sensible BC Society and served on the Board of Directors of NORML Canada and the BC Civil Liberties Association. These non-profits groups work tirelessly on critical law reform issues.
Kirk Tousaw began practicing law in 1998 in the United States and has a background in business litigation, criminal defence and social justice advocacy pursuant to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He has been a practicing member of the Law Society of British Columbia since 2005. The majority of his current practice consists of defending those charged with cannabis offences and working with people and organizations in the medical cannabis industry.
Academically, Kirk holds a Bachelor’s of Art in political philosophy (Michigan State University) a Juris Doctor, cum laude (Wayne State University School of Law) and a Master’s in Law (University of British Columbia Faculty of Law). Kirk has completed two years of doctoral studies at the UBC Faculty of Law and is presently awaiting the opportunity to return to his studies and obtain the degree.
Kirk has written and spoken extensively on issues related to drug policy, privacy, religious freedom and criminal justice policy. In addition, Kirk has had the privilege of testifying several times before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights of the House of Commons and also before the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
In recognition of his work and advocacy on behalf of medical cannabis patients and providers, Kirk was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal / Médaille du jubilé de dia in January 24, 2013. He was awarded that honor by the Government of Canada. The medal honours significant achievements and contributions to their fellow countrymen, their community, or to Canada.
In addition to practicing law, Kirk is the CEO of Great Gardener Farms, Ltd., a licensed cannabis micro-cultivator based in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, BC.
